TAHIRA Brings Freedom Stories to Bullock

TAHIRA Brings History Stories to Bullock

GLASSBORO – TAHIRA, a storyteller, poet and musician, brought her show, “Freedom Stories,” to Dorothy L. Bullock School recently. The PTO sponsored this interactive, informative assembly which featured stories of Ruby Bridges, Dr. Martin Luther King and other historical figures for Black History Month.

TAHIRA told the students, “I want to share with you the stories of ordinary people who did extraordinary things to make sure we had laws that were good and just. It is important that we share these stories. It’s important because we all need to be treated fairly.”

TAHIRA delivered the message that while Dr. Martin Luther King was a vital part of African American history, there were many brave and inspiring contributors along the way.

Students enthusiastically accepted TAHIRA’s invitation to respond to her using phrases from the Ga language, one of many languages spoken in Ghana. When asked for comments and questions, the students were eager to share what they had already learned in class. The storyteller reached students by telling Ruby Bridges’ story through the eyes of young Ruby herself, a child the same age as many Dorothy L. Bullock students.
